The Ultimate Guide to Natural Couple Photoshoot Poses

Copying couple photoshoot poses from Pinterest is easy enough but actually capturing connection between those couples requires a different approach.

Natural Couple Photoshoot Poses

When I first started photography, a lot of my pictures turned out really awkward and the only directions I could give were “look at the camera / just be yourself / be natural” – well, no wonder the pictures didn’t turn out at all natural. (Check out these other newbie photography mistakes to avoid).

Getting a couple to feel comfortable is the key to couple photoshoot poses that really bring out their personality and encapsulate their relationship.

Instead of relying on stiff poses that have zero personality, the best way forward is to focus on photo prompts that evoke genuine emotions and interactions between the couple.

In this blog post, I’ll share my go-to tips and prompts for capturing stunning, authentic couple photos.

Why Natural Prompts Work Better Than Stiff Couple Photoshoot Poses

One of the biggest challenges of couple photoshoot poses is avoiding awkwardness.

Many couples aren’t used to being photographed together outside of selfies and quick phone snaps, so traditional posing can sometimes make them feel self-conscious.

Natural prompts, on the other hand, encourage couples to interact, laugh, and focus on each other rather than on the camera.

By giving some gentle prompts instead of rigid instructions, you create opportunities for connection.

These moments of connection result in images that feel real and unscripted.

The key is not to force a pose, but to create a situation where the couple naturally falls into one.

Helping your couple to relax

Before the photoshoot even begins, it’s important to help your couple relax.

A couple that feels relaxed and comfortable before the shoot will be much more at ease in front of the camera.

Here are some steps to ensure your couple relaxes:

  • Conversation: Spend 10-15 minutes chatting to your couple. Ask them some questions about themselves, ask them what their plans are after the shoot. If it’s a wedding, you can ask them how they felt during the ceremony and what they’re most looking forward to about their reception.
  • Explain the session: Let them know that they won’t be standing still in rigid poses the entire time. Explain that there will be a lot of walking, talking, and laughing. This takes the pressure off them to “perform.”
  • Music: Ask the couple for their favorite music and play it during the shoot. Music can help people loosen up and feel more at ease.
  • Refer to your pre-shoot questionnaire: Hopefully you will have sent the couple a questionnaire before the shoot, to get to know them better. If you don’t send out a questionnaire, ask them what is the one thing that instantly makes them both laugh, what inside jokes they might have, how they like to spend their time as a couple etc.

Natural Couple Photoshoot Poses & Prompts

Now, let’s dive into some natural poses & prompts that will help you capture candid and meaningful moments during a couple’s photoshoot.

These are divided into categories to help you adapt them to different settings.

Walking Prompts

Walking is a very simple way to keep couples moving and engaged.

I will always go to this first, as you can put on a longer focal length lens and stand further away from your couple. This will give them some space before being confronted with the camera.

It helps them relax, and as they focus on their partner and the environment, you’ll capture some beautiful in-between moments with lots of movement.

Here are some walking prompts:

The ‘Walk and Talk’: Ask the couple to hold hands and walk towards or away from you, or toward a specific location. Encourage them to talk about their favourite TV show or a funny memory. The key is for them to stay connected and engaged with each other.

The ‘Look Back’: Have one partner walk slightly ahead and turn around to look back at the other with a smile or a laugh. This creates a playful shot that looks really natural.

The ‘Pull Along’: As they walk, have them hold hands and ask one partner to move ahead, then get that partner to pull the other partner ahead of them. Then get them to swap and repeat, so each of them are flinging the other in front! This is a great prompt for laughs and movement.

The ‘Bump Hips’: As they’re walking side by side, holding hands, get them to bump each others hips. This can turn into a bit of game and creates lots of natural smiles.

Sitting Prompts

For sitting couple photoshoot poses, think beyond a simple seated position.

Encourage interaction by using prompts that bring the couple closer together and foster genuine/relaxed moments.

Head in Lap: Have one partner sit cross-legged while the other rests their head in their lap. The one sitting can brush their partner’s hair or gaze down lovingly. This creates an intimate and tender moment.

Sit and Chat: Ask the couple to sit close together on a bench or blanket. Encourage them to talk about a funny story from their first date. Their expressions and body language will shift naturally as they reminisce.

Leaning Back: Have the couple sit back-to-back on the ground or a bench. This pose creates quite soft images.

From Behind the Seat: Have one partner put their arm around the other partner and photograph them from behind where they are sitting.

Wrap Around Hug: Have them sit on the ground, one in front of the other and have the partner who is behind wrap their arms around the partner in front.

Standing Prompts

Standing can often feel the most awkward for couples, but with the right prompts, you can make them feel natural.

Forehead to Forehead Natural Posing Prompt

Bear Hug from Behind: Have one partner stand slightly behind the other and wrap their arms around them. This can be romantic or playful depending on how the couple interacts.

The ‘Sway‘: Ask the couple to hold hands and sway back and forth as if they’re dancing to slow music. Encourage them to look at each other and smile. This keeps them in motion and helps them feel connected.

Forehead to Forehead: Have the couple stand close and touch foreheads. This intimate moment is perfect for a close-up shot. You can ask them to close their eyes and take a deep breath together to relax. Be sure to tell them “gently press your foreheads together” as you don’t want an accidental headbutt situation.

Head on Their Chest: A good prompt for couples where one is a little shorter then the other, is to have the shorter partner lean on the taller one and put their head on their chest. The taller partner can then hold them/put their hands through their hair and then you can ask them to look at each other etc.

The ‘Spin’: Have one partner spin or twirl the other for movement and extra smiles.

Intimate and Romantic Prompts

These prompts are all about creating a connection and a little chemistry between the couple for some more romantic photographs.

Close-up shots are perfect for capturing small gestures like hand-holding or gentle touches, as well as eyes looking up etc.

Romantic Couple Prompts

Nose Nuzzle: Ask the couple to gently nuzzle their noses together. This is a classic prompt that almost always results in sweet, intimate shots. It’s perfect for getting romantic, affectionate pictures.

The Hand Caress: Ask the couple to hold hands, but focus on how they interact with each other’s hands. Have them stroke each other’s fingers or hold hands in different ways. You can get beautiful close-up shots of the hands intertwined.

The Almost Kiss: Instead of capturing the actual kiss, ask the couple to move in close as if they’re about to kiss, but pause just before their lips meet. This creates an intimate moment full of tension and emotion.

Brush Their Hair Away: Have one partner brush the other’s hair out of their face or eyes and gently touch their face. Photograph from a few angles to get both of their facial expressions separately, as well as them both together.

Fun and Playful Prompts

Sometimes, the best couple photoshoot poses come from moments of genuine laughter and fun.

These prompts can sound a little silly – so I like to warn my couple that while they sound daft, they create some really good moments and to just trust me.

The Spin: Have one partner pick up the other and spin them around. This creates laughter & movement. Make sure to capture both the spin and the aftermath of smiles.

The Tickle: If the couple is okay with it, ask one partner to tickle the other. This is an easy way to get genuine smiles and laughter, making for some really natural photos.

Running Together: Ask the couple to hold hands and run toward you or away from you. The movement creates energetic, carefree photos, and you’ll capture plenty of natural expressions.

Whisper in Their Ear: One of my favourites for fun couples is to get them to take turns whispering in each other’s ear, in their sexiest voice (think M&S adverts) but listing cereals, biscuits or other hilariously mundane things. This gets some really good laughs, especially when one of them gets to Hobnobs or Custard Creams!

Tips for Keeping The Mood

Even with the best poses and prompts in the world, the success of your couple photoshoot largely depends on how comfortable the couple feels.

Here are a few additional tips to ensure they stay relaxed and have fun:

Give Positive Feedback: Constantly reassure the couple that they’re doing great. Compliment their interactions and tell them how amazing they look together.

Encourage Breaks: If they start to feel overwhelmed, suggest taking short breaks. Let them talk and interact while you capture candid shots during these pauses.

Use Their Ideas: If the couple suggests a pose or has a specific idea, be open to it! Incorporating their suggestions will make the shoot feel more collaborative and personal.

Don’t Push Anything: If your couple doesn’t like an idea, move onto something else. Don’t push something they’re uncomfortable with.

Giving Them the BEST Photoshoot Experience

A couple photoshoot is not just about capturing beautiful poses; it’s about creating an amazing experience that the couple will remember.

By using natural photo prompts, focusing on genuine moments, and ensuring the couple feels comfortable, you’ll deliver not just photos but a memory-making experience.

Encourage the couple to be themselves, and don’t be afraid to capture the in-between moment like the laughter, the silly faces, the spontaneous kisses – these are THE BEST. These are the moments that truly tell their story.

Every couple is unique, and their photos should reflect the essence and uniqueness their relationship.
